Google Webmaster Tools (GWT) can help improve your website’s ranking in search engines. When you register and verify your site using GWT, you will have access to three key areas for review – site configuration, your site on the web and diagnostics.
The “Site Configuration” section allows you to review and alter your site’s basic configuration settings. Here, there are a few ways you can adjust the way that Google handles your website. You can change basic settings, submit a sitemap, edit sitelinks and change your URL.
Under “Your Site on the Web,” you can review basic stats and data about your site’s performance. You can find information about what keywords people are using to locate your site, see the number of impressions your site has received in search engine results, the number of clicks to your site and the average rank of your site in particular search queries.
Why is this information useful?
When you search a term on Google, say “satellite internet discounts” for example, the search engine software sorts through millions of websites and returns you a list of results based on carefully crafted algorithms. The search engine will rank some websites higher than others based on a perceived measure of importance and credibility, called PageRank. PageRank is primarily determined by the quantity and quality of incoming links, the keywords of the sites linking into your site and the keywords on your site.
When you have access to the GWT search queries report, you’ll be able to see where your site is performing well and where it needs improvement. This will also open your eyes to how Google views your website in terms of importance. Armed with this information, you’ll be able to better optimize your website to mirror the keywords and keyphrases that are most relevant.
Under the “Diagnostics” section, you can access critical site information about malware, assess crawl errors, view crawl stats and review HTML suggestions.
Overall, Google Webmaster Tools is a must-have for any webmaster looking to improve SEO and increase visibility on the web.
